The age of empirical sports has definitely passed and we are going through the age of Scientific Sports.

The Sport Science has marked such a rapid evolution that knowledge multiplies in a geometric way and doubles every five years.

The Cyprus Sport Organisation keeping abreast of this trend has set up Scientific Committees and departments so as to provide sports with as good conditions as possible.

The Supreme Council for the Athletes' Health is the competent vehicle, which tackles issues of preventive check up for those who are doing sports. It is responsible for bringing out a health report named after Health Reports of the Supreme Council for the Athletes' Health. It takes care of the training of the medical, paramedical and other services' staff who are involved in people doing sports. It is also responsible for staffing appropriately the medical institutions and providing them with the medical security required. It controls directly the health of those doing sports as well as their medical and pharmaceutical care.

It organises seminars and lectures directly related to Sport Medicine and First Aids issues and anything else in conjunction with the medical care of the athlete.

It issues and publishes printed material regarding the training, the prevention and the provision of advice as far as the protection of the athlete in the sport facilities is concerned.

Procedure of issuing the health reports

The under-mentioned procedure for the health report issuing should be followed:

• Fulfilling the special form by a club or another doctor
• Submission to chemical and x-ray exams
• Submission to a cardiogram – fatigue test for athletes older than 35
• Evaluation of the findings by a group of doctors who decide upon the issue of a health report for the athlete.
• In case it is deemed intentional by the evaluation group of doctors, the athlete is required to have further examinations done
• The athlete should send a couple of photos of his / hers with the special form to have a health report issued
• Once the evaluation form is signed by the group of doctors and certifies that the athlete is in a position to compete, he / she has a special identity cart issued by the Supreme Council for the Athlete's Health
• The health report (identity) is signed either by the President or a member of the Health Report Committee of the Supreme Council

The Supreme Council for the Athlete's Health has ceaselessly been operating for 17 years and Health Reports have been issued for more that 50.000 athletes men and women.

Yet all the Federations, which have been recognised by the Cyprus Sport Organisation have included in their statutes provisions relevant to the issuing of the health reports for every athlete, which is a mandatory procedure.

No athlete can be registered on a championship sheet without presenting his / her health report.

The multifarious work accomplished by the Supreme Council and its simple results have fully vindicated the Cyprus Sport Organisation, which introduced this valuable service in the Cyprus Sport Life.

Science plays from now onwards its one catalytic role in sports. The CSO will enhance even more this service, which is deemed necessary from every point of view either it concerns basic sports or championship while its contribution to social sports, which touches the wider population of the country - is deemed remarkable.

Medical Centres – Medical Units: The Organisation taking into account the needs of the Supreme Council for the Athlete's Health ensures the operation of medical centers and mobile or fixed medical units with a view of a better functioning of the Supreme Council and its better serving those doing sports. The cardiograms from the medical centers of the Cyprus Sport Organisation should be free for the athletes.
